Can “Stand Your Ground” happen in Pennsylvania?
All across the country Republican legislatures are preparing variations of the Florida ‘Stand Your Ground” law. There is a tendency to say it could not happen in Pennsylvania, but could it? It is becoming clear that giving people with guns what amounts to an excuse to use them is a very dangerous proposition. As the Tampa Bay Times said “State legislators sold stand your ground as a legal protection for law-abiding Floridians who were forced, through no fault of their own, to defend their family and property.”
Increasingly the law is allowing violent killers to go free. As the paper goes on to say, “Nearly 60 percent of those who claimed self-defense had been arrested at least once before the day they killed someone”
We do not want such a law in Pennsylvania.
Given the events that took place in Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14th 2012, it is clear we need more sensible gun controls. We need to tighten the ability to acquire weapons. It seems that everyone except the legislatures who are supposed to represent them is at least in favor of common sense gun control laws.
I will stand against “Stand Your Ground Laws” and for common sense laws that keep weapons out of the hands of those that should not have them.
